The State of Georgia's Low Voltage Licensing Process
The steps for obtaining a Georgia low voltage contractor’s license:
To obtain your Georgia; General (LVG), Alarm (LVA),
Telecommunication (LVT), or Unrestricted (LVU) electrical licenses by
examination. You will
need to mail the following to the Georgia Construction Industry Licensing
Board for approval:
o A Completed State of Georgia Low
Voltage Contractors Application. A Complete Application Packet Includes;
Application for License Examination Form and three (3) reference letter
forms.

A low voltage license is required of any person who contracts to install, alter, service, or repair low voltage systems in the State of Georgia. A separate license is issued for general, alarm, telecommunication, and unrestricted low voltage contracting. Board Rule 121-2-.04
The General Low Voltage license (LVG) covers any electrical systems, other than alarm or telecommunication systems, involving low-voltage wiring, including, but not limited to stand alone intercom systems and call alert systems (audio or visual); distribution wiring for alarm systems and telecommunications systems including local area network systems; sound systems; public address systems; the low voltage side of energy management systems; antenna systems and satellite dish systems, irrigation system wiring; and low voltage lighting. The Telecommunication Low Voltage license (LVT) covers any switching system and associated apparatus which performs the basic function of two-way voice or data service, or both, and which can be a commonly controlled system capable of being administered both locally and remotely via secured access. The Alarm Low Voltage license (LVA) covers any device or combination of devices used to detect a situation, causing an alarm in the event of a burglary, fire, robbery, medical emergency, or equipment failure, or on the occurrence of any other predetermined event. The Unrestricted Low Voltage license (LVU) covers all low voltage work including that work which falls under the General, Alarm and Telecommunications Licenses.

September be left blank or the same "Daytime Telephone" number used.

Fill in your complete
email address. If you don't have an email go to a free site and create one (see
below). Your email is used as a way for the State to contact you quickly
regarding the application or its process. You should check your email box

Veteran’s Preference: Check
R if
you are requesting Veterans’ preference points. You will have had to been a US
veteran meeting certain conditions to be eligible for five or ten percentage
points added to the examination score [Georgia law; General Provisions Volume
30, Title 43-1-9.(1)(2)(3)]. To qualify, to receive five (5) percentage points
veterans must have served for a minimum of one (1) year in active duty status,
and must have served during a period of conflict or war for a minimum of ninety
(90) days. For ten (10) percentage preference points you must have served during
a period of conflict or war and discharged for injury or illness incurred in the
line of duty with your disability officially rated. If you meet any of these
conditions provide a copy
of your DD-214 with your application and documentation of your disability (if
applicable). Any copies will be retained by the State and not returned to you.

Specify Work Relating to Low Voltage Duties- Begin with Present employment

Name of Employer - Fill in your complete name of your employer.

Phone - Fill in your contact telephone number for employer. If unable to put a
valid number, state the reason you are unable to provide the number. For
example: I do not want my employer contacted because it September adversely effect my
employment due to the fact that I September be perceived by them as a future
competitor against them once I obtain a license.
o
Employer’s Complete Address - Fill in
your complete address for employer if
they are no longer in business put last known address and state employer out of
business.
o
Name of Supervisor - Fill in your supervisor’s complete name. If self-employed put N/A.
o
Job Title of Supervisor - Fill in your supervisor’s complete job title. If
self-employed put N/A.
o
Type of License Held - Fill in the license number that the company holds.
o
Your Job Title - Fill in your job title.
o
Employed From - Fill in the month and year you started with the
company. To: Print the month and year your employment ended with that
company. If you are currently employed with the company, print Present.
o
Approximate# of Hours/Week you perform duties
listed below - Fill in the
number of hours you worked) on this job.
o Description of Low Voltage Duties - Fill in your complete description of your job duties. Be very clear and detailed; state the different components used on the job and the implementation of these components. If during your years of employment with the company you have worked in different low voltage categories you September want to consider breaking them out to allow yourself the opportunity to expand on each low voltage types. For example: if you have worked on alarms and telecommunication systems, you would want to explain the different components and responsibilities as it pertains strictly to alarms. Then break out another section to describe the components and responsibilities on the telecommunication side of your job. The goal of this section is to show your duties in the field you wish to qualify for, with emphasis on the low voltage work you do in your day to day schedule. You want the individual reviewing the application to understand what your job is without guessing. Repeat as needed. If additional employment history space is needed you can use a separate piece of paper.
Part III- References
Attach three (3) completed original and notarized reference forms from the people listed below.
Fill in the complete names, telephone number, and addresses for your three references. At least one must be a licensed contractor. Next to any licensed contractor in parenthesis you might want to add their License Number.
Part IV – Personal History

o Have you received a diploma in Engineering Technology or a certificate for completion of a vocational-technical college program?
o
Have you ever held a low voltage contractors’
license?
o Have you ever had a licensed revoked, suspended , or otherwise sanctioned by any board or agency, or have you ever been denied issuance of or, pursuant to disciplinary proceedings, refused renewal of a license by any board or agency in Georgia or other state?
o
Have you: (1) been convicted of a misdemeanor
(other than minor traffic violation) within the past five years: (2) ever been
convicted of a felony; or (3) entered into a plea of guilty, nolo contendere, or
under First Offender Act?
If all of the questions are not answer your application is incomplete and September not be processed so double check that all questions have a check by the yes or no.
Part V- Certification
This section needs to be sign in front of a Notary Public in order for the notary to notarize, and must be original signatures sent to the state.
Reference Forms
Low Voltage Contractors Applicant Reference Form:
o Any person completing a reference form for an applicant must complete 1,2,3,5 and 6.
o Any person with knowledge of and applicant’s installation experience needs to complete all eight (8) questions.
o Once completed the individual must sign in front of a notary and signatures must be original when submitted to the state.
Helpful Tips
P If at all possible type your information into this form. If you are unable to type it, be sure to print legibly. A legible application makes for a smoother process.
P Do not leave blanks, place a N/A in blanks when not applicable.
P Check and re-check the application before sending to the state.
P When describing your job duties keep in mind an administrative person not a technician will be reviewing your application so keep your description in the simplest of terms but still putting as much detail as possible is the best way to go.
Remember to include the following in your package to the Georgia Construction Industry Licensing Board for approval:
P Complete signed and notarized application.
P Three (3) complete signed and notarized reference forms at least one being a licensed contractor.
P A criminal background check; Georgia residents can go to http://www.gasbc.org/ for information on where to obtain one and Florida residents can go to http://www.fdle.state.fl.us to obtain one. Residence of other States should search the internet under "Criminal Background Check for that State"
P A check for $30.00 payable to Georgia State Board of Construction.
P Any follow up documents from Part IV.
P If you have applied for Veteran’s Preference Points be sure to include a copy of your DD-214.
